Algeria participated with a large delegation in the Fifth Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in The Hague from May 15 to 19, 2023.
On the sidelines of this Conference, the Executive Secretariat of the Interministerial Committee for the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, in coordination with the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), organized a side event on May 15, 2023, in The Hague, entitled “Capacity Building in the Framework of South-South Cooperation.”
Permanent Representatives of several countries to the OPCW, officials of this organization, diplomats, and experts of various nationalities attended.
During this meeting, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the OPCW emphasized, in her opening remarks, the role Algeria’s active role and its contribution to the Organization’s capacity-building activities, particularly at the regional level.
For their part, the Executive Secretary of the Interministerial Committee for the Implementation of the CWC and the other speakers highlighted Algeria’s theoretical and practical expertise in the areas of cooperation provided for by the Convention. They also presented the progress of preparations for the organization of “CHEMEX Africa,” scheduled to take place in Algiers from September 23 to October 4, 2023, which will focus on building the capacities of African countries for a multi-component response to chemical emergencies.
The “CHEMEX Africa” program is part of the implementation of Article 10 of the Convention, which seeks to develop the capacities of States Parties in the area of assistance and protection against incidents and attacks related to chemical warfare, in which toxic industrial chemicals are used.
